HEAnet is Ireland’s National Research and Education Network, providing internet connectivity and ICT shared services across all levels of the Irish education system, reaching 1,000,000 end users. We connect learners and researchers across all of Ireland to education resources and to fellow national educational and research networks in Europe, and the rest of the world. We are looking for a Project Manager to join our Project management Office (PMO) on a fixed purpose contract (maternity leave cover).


What the PMO Team does :

The Project Management Office (PMO) is a small team which manages a portfolio of projects in HEAnet and also provides project management support across the company. As a technical company, many HEAnet projects are technical in nature working with our internal technical teams on new and existing services and spanning technologies such as networking, servers, cloud, identity, storage and security. Projects can also more business orientated focusing on areas such as ERP, CRM, Business processes improvement, Facilities or Service Level Agreements.


The focus of the role is to work as part of the PMO team by managing the delivery of several projects and supporting the activities of the team as well as providing guidance to other areas of the business with their projects. The PMO manages a number of projects directly and for others, working with project managers and project sponsors across the business e.g., with project definition, PM expertise, toolkits, processes etc. The PMO is the source of project management expertise and is also responsible for governance and oversight of projects.


The PMO team is a collaborative working environment and we encourage each team member to bring their own experience and strengths to help improve the team and the way it works.

You will also have a 1:1 meeting every 4 weeks with your manager. We encourage critical thinking and the exploration of new ideas. We often form cross-team special interest groups for specific topic discussions, both ongoing and for fixed projects.


We provide a diverse and interesting workload but limit single performance objectives to a max of 30%, so you will get to work on 2-3 projects depending on size and exposure to all activities of the team.

What we need from you :

  • Significant experience in a similar project management role with proven experience in managing the implementation of complex systems or infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge and experience of project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle
  • A proven track record of excellent communication and customer service skills enabling successful interactions with key stakeholders
  • A proven ability to manage risk and change within projects
  • Sound judgment, problem solving and collaboration in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to problems
  • Trustworthy, open and transparent, with a high degree of personal integrity
  • A high level of motivation and enthusiasm for the job


The successful candidate will undertake the following:


  • Manage the successful delivery of a portfolio of projects under the guidance of the HEAnet Project Management Office (PMO)
  • Coordinate efforts with specialists from across HEAnet, service providers, application vendors and client institutions to ensure successful delivery of projects
  • Adhere to the HEAnet-prescribed project methodology for each project assigned, including preparation of project initiation documents, project plans, risk mitigation and issue resolution strategy, project reporting, project closure, and so forth
  • Contribute to defining and managing project budgets and associated contingency management.
  • To define and measure delivery against success metrics
  • To manage project change in a structured and controlled manner over the life of each project
  • Ensure PMO methodology, standards and best practices are consistently followed and applied
  • Co-ordinate with the relevant HEAnet Managers regarding resource planning for project delivery
  • Planning resource activities, priorities, dependencies, constraints, quality management activities and milestones
  • In conjunction with the PMO & Services Planning Manager ensure a high level of co-operation in delivering the overall objectives of the function

  • Previous experience or strong awareness of the Education & Research Sector
  • Knowledge of public procurement tendering processes
  • Experience of Change management methodologies
  • Experience of working with IT security projects or services
  • Formal project manager qualification or professional certification
  • Good knowledge of ICT technologies
